In the past six months, I've really been into music, because lets face it, my iPod for the former part of the six months and my cellphone for the latter part of the six months, were my only company. Of course, I've always loved music, but it was sort of highlighted or showcased in these six months, due to my non-exposure to games, Facebook, or for that matter, this blog too.
My patterns of listening to music, or rather selecting my music is quite simple and kinda stubborn. It is still the same anyway. I like a song. I like the artist. I listen to that song like a hundred times, then instead of changing the artist or listening to songs from other artists, I search more songs from the same artist and listen to all of his/her best songs. Now this goes on for a long time! Because I listen to each good song of that artist at least 50 times.
I started off this pattern in the ninth standard, and the artist was Bryan Adams. I listened to Bryan Adams till half of my twelfth standard (i.e. six months prior to this) and I for my music world, he was the only one.
And as I got bored of listening to the same songs over and over again, I searched for new artistes. New bands. I didn't want to listen to metal or rock, because that's all I had heard, the past three years. And that's when I came across- The Beatles. (It gives me such joy to even declare it :-D )
I've mentioned about The Beatles in my previous post. That was just the start of my craziness though. The Beatles were different. Even today. No one has been able to create that kind of music till now. And am just talking in the number of different songs, or different genre that they could conjure up. Every song promised to be different and it was good too.
When you listen to an artist for a long time (like when you follow the pattern mentioned above) you can predict the type of song, the genre. It all sounds similar. At least for songs released in gap of two years or so. However, each Beatles song is extremely different. Maybe because they had four people who could write songs, while normally a band has only one or two. You listen to A Day In The Life, Norwegian Wood, In My Life, Strawberry Fields Forever, I Am The Walrus, Yesterday, Penny Lane, they are all distinctly different. That's why I never get tired of them. That's why the world never gets tired of them. It has been around 50 years since The Beatles started out, and their music is still popular. Not popular like a Justin Beiber, or Eminem, or someone else, but lots of people, people of my age, still listen to them.
I would be too haughty to say that The Beatles actually created MUSIC. Because everyone has their own choice on music. But everyone who's ever listened to even one song of Beatles, has to agree that they were very different.
My personal favourite song of The Beatles- Hey Jude. Most of their songs are really short, 2-4 minutes. Which was kinda good, because it always makes you want more. And it was as if this song for made exactly that. This one is a seven minute song, and does it make you want it to go forever or what! The main song is about three minutes, but the climax is the best music I have ever heard so far.
The last 4 minutes of the song, defines The Beatles. Redefines Music. As Paul McCartney raises the pitch of the song, dragging one word, shifts the song to a fade out coda (google it) , and this is the classic example of The Beatles rocking it. Backed by McCartney's vocals, the rest three repeat the phrase " Na na na na-na-na-na" and the songs fades out before that phrase is repeated infinite times.
The song is happy as well as sad. Whenever I feel sad, I play this song on my guitar, repeat the "Na na.." infinitely till I feel good. And it does. And this goes when I am happy too. I still play the song, and go on singing " Na na.."
Music Is So Awesome!
P.S- Great to be back to blogging.!
P.P.S- Na na na na-na-na-na..!

ReplyDeleteMusic touches us in a way that nothing else can.......and yes, the Beatles outshine many others when it comes to music that has stood the test of time. The fact that you're writing about them in the year 2013, so many decades after they first made their songs is proof of how good they were. Keep listening to great music. It's one of the greatest joys in life.
