My Love Affair.....

It was a long time ago. About 8 years back. However, every single detail still remains etched in my memory. I mean, who will not remember such a time in your life? Who will not remember their first love? The first time you really forget the outside world and just concentrate on that person. The first time when you can spend hours with that person, without food (not water though :P ), without friends. The first time, when you are more than willing to keep yourself in that small little world with that loving little person of yours. You never get tired of that person, you want to spend the rest of your life with that person. That is FIRST LOVE.

I had a first love too. Well, I continue to be in that first love. However, unfortunately, my first love was not with a woman ( !!!!! ). And not a guy either ( I AM straight). It was with a thing (Imagine all you can!!!! :P ) However, for me they were not things. They were much more than that. They were my BOOKS.

First clarification, NOT my text books (If you know me properly, you won't need that explanation :D ) Yes, they were my beloved story books.

I really don't remember the 'firsts' of my affair with my books. Something I regret. I cannot recollect which was the first book I read, how I got into this habit, at what age, etcetera. However, it does not serve purpose anymore, because my books became my best friends from the day I got into contact with them. Now I know, me using the phrase 'Books are my best friends' makes me seem very nerdy etcetera, I would like to defend my fellow mates here (Not that I feel a need, but others gotta see my point). Reading books is just an entertainment for us like it is to watch a movie, play a sport, watch television. Well I don't wanna go on about this, because I don't want to be all 'preachy' and spoil your read.

Anyway, my romance really picked up pace when I stepped into a bigger world, the secondary section, where I was exposed to the Library. I have many fond memories of the library. My first one which I can commemorate dates back to the fifth standard when I used to rush after school (literally run) to the library (because it was open only till 2pm i.e half hour after my school ended) to catch up with the Secret Seven series. I had just finished Famous Five at that time and thought that Enid Blyton was a guy!!!! My second one was in the sixth standard, when I had come at 7 am in the morning, half hour before the library opens, just to get Library Card No 1. I was reading the Five Find Outers at that time, which was like the milder book, compared to the Harry Potter books I read as soon as they got published.

Then there was that lull period after the eighth standard when I was exposed to the computer and the internet. So reading took a back seat as I explored the computer I always dreamed of owning. However, in two years I attained the saturation point (which is never attained with books) and in the most crucial year of my life (or so said by many people :P ) I got back my hobby which I had missed so much. Of course in the years in between, I was always connected to books, but not in the way I used to. My reading had matured from story books, to novels, to self-help and self-inspirational books. And of course, now I have that passion in life and one more, writing :D

Throughout these sixteen years, my passions have changed, my hobbies have changed but my only partner throughout these phases were my books. It is the one hobby that never left me, but whenever it did, it always came back stronger.

I really don't understand the reason why reading isn't a common habit. If only everyone could give it a chance at least once. It is the cheapest (or so it is said (but you can always get books from station for Rs. 60! )) and the most entertaining hobby one can have. However, I guess, not everybody has the same taste.

So here it is, non readers, please give reading a chance and you will be thanking me later( :P )
And readers, Happy Reading!!!!!

P.S- Technically speaking, this post is being read by 'Readers' and 'Non Readers' will not even read this Post. So this whole thing is a..... (Fill In the Blanks)

P.P.S- Why did I not think of it before? DAMN!!!!!

  1. The joys of reading.....one of the things I really love as well, is to get completely lost in the imaginary world of words on a page. Most often, I actually feel I'm part of the world that the author has created. Although I love reading though, I hardly ever find the time to read nowadays. My reading of late, is restricted to reference work for school, which is also an enriching experience in its own way, but I still long for time to be able to just sit and read and read and read for hours on end.If only days were longer than 24 hours and work wasn't as time-consuming as it is.

I try and make up for it in the holidays though. I have a whole library at home itself, of books I've picked up over the years. Every year during the vacations I catch up on my reading, either reading some of those books for the first time, or re-reading some of my favourites. There's nothing that can give a person more joy than reading.Other than writing, of course, which is one of my passions.

One of my professors of English Literature used to always say though, that two ways in which a writer can become good at his or her craft, is to be a good reader and to travel as much as possible. Reading opens up one's mind to new ideas and broadens a person's horizons, whereas travelling exposes him/her to new experiences. Knowingly or unknowingly, these ideas and experiences get translated into one's writing and in course of time, makes one a good writer.

So, enjoy your love affair Shaishav!

  2. Yes miss, getting lost in a book, forgetting the outside world, hunger and sleep is an enriching experience and rare. It takes a very good writer to engage a person completely and write an 'unputdownable' book... :)
I guess what distinguishes between good and better writers is travel, because I feel, almost all good writers read books. So I guess, the travelling part is the decider. But I get the point how travelling can improve your writing. You always write better about your experiences...
And rest assured, I AM enjoying my affair with my books. :P :D

  3. good one again! :)
i completely agree with you. books are more than a past time actually. there is so much to learn from them.. some really help us out in real life situations.. (have had a few experiences)
and when life goes haywire.. they help you escape ;)
as for my experience, they help me to give some shape to my emotions...
and im sure that the 'readers' who'll read this will definately tell the 'non readers'to read this! :)
[i know its really a lame comment as compared to all the comments that people write here(im seriously not good at this). but for a change, i tried..]

  9. Hey Shaishav. I really like reading your blogs. Though I havent posted any comments on your blogs before, I regularly read your blogs. You have a maturity way above your age, and you have a very good way of expressing your thoughts and emotions. Unlike most 16 year olds, who just skirt the surface, you do explore deeper thoughts. Keep it up, and despite what stream you chose to study, keep up with your reading n writing.. If nothing else, I am sure, it will bring you immense joy.

As for the love affair with books, I too have one. If I go to a bookstore, I cant come out without buying a book, and since I dont have space to keep so many books, I keep passing on my books, or donate them.. Like they said in "Namesake", "books are a way to travel the world, without moving an inch". Have you noticed, that whenever a book is made into a movie, and you have read the book first, you are disappointed with the movie.. because books allow you to imagine n create your own world, whereas the movie kind of has a set framework, so they cannot do better than your own imagination!.

  10. Wow Aunty I never thought you would read my blog too. That is truly flattering!
The point you made about the books being better than films is spot on. I have seen many films that are made out of books, which are always a disappointment because of the fact that when we read books, we get the freedom to imagine a character, his looks etc. as we want. While in movies, the time is too less to accommodate everything and also because of the fact that the pace and other details are dictated to us.
Thanks a lot again for the compliments and also for taking the trouble to comment :)

  11. Books have always been my best friends...and i dont notice the world around me unless i finish it...when i was small my mother used to tell me stories...and i being a very talkative kid (i still am) would keep on pestering her with questions...she then made me read books...and i have never have stopped since then...i never had any friends when i was small...(i was kind of an outcast...i've been wearing spectacles since i was 4)...but that helped me to discover the wildly engrossing literary world...even though i have many friends now...none of them can replace the place books hold in my heart...my best friends...
